Avoid Believing the Myths

I've been in the computer repair business for some time now, and there seems to be a few myths that many people believe about computer repair, computer repair companies, and other related topics.

Welcome to the frequently asked questions (FAQ) page!

Here, we will try to answer some questions that occur frequently (hence the name frequently asked questions!).

If you have a question that you don't see addressed here, please post it in our forum (this is a work in progress after all). We will answer your question, but if enough people post a similar question, we will add it to the FAQ.

The name of the website is Computer Repair Company In a Box; where are the company and the box?

Good question. The owner and creator of Computer Repair Company In a Box actually owns and operates a small computer repair, service, consulting, and sales company in NE OH. However, this website is a separate project and is not intended to promote that business.

As far as the "Box" goes, this website is the box (at least for now). The web master does intend to develop a do-it-yourself computer repair kit in the near future though, which will most likely be packaged in a box of some sort.

Why the Heck did you pick such a long name (or URL, web address, etc) for this website?

There are 2 reasons for this: we wanted a search engine friendly URL (so you could find us!), and the shorter search engine friendly URLs were already taken. Suggestions welcome.

If you make a living repairing people's computers, why would you tell us how to do it ourselves on this website?

The good questions just keep flying in! Well, first of all, the computer repair business only serves a small geographic area (compared to the whole U.S.). Secondly, many computer repairs are easy. The hopes are that people can be taught to perform their own maintenance and repairs; thus saving them loads of money, time, aggravation, frustration, etc. And yes, the development of a product that makes this easy for the average person, and can be had for less than the cost of 1 call to a repair technician is in the works.

Ok, so what makes you so smart (or at least qualified) to teach us how to repair computers? OR Why should we listen to you?

Another great question. I've been running a successful computer repair business on my own (i.e. zero employees and about the same amount of help and support from friends and family) for 4 years now. My company is an A-rated BBB accredited business. Soon, testimonials from REAL customers of mine will be posted; mostly from businesses, which can be VERIFIED.

As for technical skills, I hold a college degree (University of Akron, OH) in Electrical Engineering (BSEE with emphasis on computers), a diploma from TESST College in Baltimore (Electronics, Computers, & Robotics), and I've had lots of hands on practice. I do not pretend or claim to know everything, however, learning is a life long experience and only stops if one wants it to stop.
